Assess Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) Exposure Status

This rapid antibody test detects exposure to feline coronavirus, a common virus in cats. It is a tool for screening programs and must be interpreted carefully as part of a complete clinical picture.

The Tashikin FCoV Antibody Test is a tool for assessing a cat's exposure to feline coronavirus. It is critical to understand that a positive result indicates only that the cat has been exposed to FCoV at some point and has developed antibodies; it DOES NOT diagnose Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Most FCoV-exposed cats remain healthy. While this test has a very limited role in the diagnosis of FIP in a symptomatic cat, its primary utility is in screening healthy cats, such as in a cattery setting, to identify FCoV-negative animals.

Responsible Use and Interpretation:

1

Cattery Screening

Can be used to maintain an FCoV-negative cattery or to assess the status of a new cat before introduction into a negative population.

2

Part of a Full Workup

In a cat with clinical signs suggestive of FIP, a NEGATIVE antibody result makes FIP less likely. A POSITIVE result is non-specific and must be combined with other data.

3

Prevent Misinterpretation

This test should never be used alone to diagnose FIP or to make euthanasia decisions. Clinical signs and other laboratory tests are essential.

This test detects antibodies to Feline Coronavirus (FCoV). Interpretation regarding FIP requires correlation with clinical signs and other diagnostic tests.

1

Collect Sample

Collect feline whole blood, or prepare serum/plasma, according to standard laboratory procedures.

2

Apply Sample

Using the provided dropper, add 1 drop (approx. 10µL) of the prepared sample into the sample well (S) of the test cassette.

3

Add Buffer

Add 2 drops of the provided assay buffer into the sample well immediately after the sample.

4

Read Results

Interpret the test results at 15 minutes. A positive result indicates the presence of FCoV antibodies.

Document Exposure for Complete Health Records

A cat's FCoV antibody status can be a relevant piece of its long-term health history. Logging the result in VetEx.ai provides a permanent record that can be referenced if the cat develops clinical signs in the future, providing one piece of a complex diagnostic puzzle.
